Dead Nation features online and offline two-player cooperative play, a lengthy campaign littered with hidden treasures, hugely upgradeable weapons and armor, and tremendous replay value thanks to a host of difficulty levels. The fifth and final difficulty level -- "Undead" -- will leave you breathless!

Players can choose any of the four survivors, each with their own abilities (even starting with a save game of the character from the previous title), or control the new character, John Morgan, who is also immune. He has a powerful kick attack that is very useful in close combat situations. The gameplay is largely identical as the survivor roams the surroundings, defeats enemies and gathers tools and weapons that can be customized and upgraded. The tropical setting is retained, but the surroundings are diversified through towns, cities and jungle. Water also plays an important role now, with large areas and cities that are flooded and many parts that can be traveled by boat. Characters can still move by foot or use a vehicle. Next to the regular quests that mainly require the character to fetch items, there are hub defense missions where a certain area needs to be barricaded and defended for a set amount of time. The game offers new weapons and customization options, as well as new enemies. Unlike in the first game, firearms are available almost right away. Thus, the player has the choice to play it as a first-person shooter rather than a brawler like the first game emphasized on.

A tropical island resort becomes a place of nightmares after a mysterious epidemic turns the majority of inhabitants into bloodthirsty zombies. As one of four playable characters, your goal is to complete missions necessary for your survival, which means battling throngs of the undead with a variety of customizable weapons and finding a way off the fictitious island of Banoi. Dead Island features an open-world environment in a campaign that supports up to four players for drop-in, drop-out cooperative action. The two male and two female characters have different strengths and weaknesses, which can be offset to a degree by leveling up. Experience points earned in combat can be used to improve a character's attributes and fighting skills. When firearms and ammo are in limited supply, you'll be able to engage enemies in hand-to-hand combat with axes, machetes, knives, clubs, and similar edged or bludgeoning weapons that will degrade over time. Explore the island's urban areas, forests, mountain highlands, caves, beaches, and other locales from a first-person perspective, or utilize an over-the-shoulder view for melee combat. The "Game of the Year Edition" for Xbox 360 includes new blueprints and weapons, the original Dead Island, and its two main DLC releases: the multiplayer "Bloodbath Arena" and the single-player "Ryder White" campaign.

The closed beta for Dead Island: Epidemic has gone live and can be played "24/7," on the off chance you signed up for it at the beginning of the month and haven't since lost interest. In this multiplayer online battle arena game, three teams of four survivors attempt to gather supplies and take control points while zombies do their best to make these tasks challenging. I missed hearing that players will have direct control over their character (WASD + mouse), which had me slightly more open-minded about Epidemic until I saw a few videos on YouTube. I was hoping for faster, more arcade-like gameplay, not this. Do I have much hope for the game? Do any of us? Not particularly. But there's still a part of my brain that is perhaps foolishly curious to see how a Dead Island MOBA will turn out.
