Star Strike was clearly inspired by the Death Star battle sequence in the movie Star Wars. You fly a space craft into the enemy launch trench. Your mission: to destroy the alien station before Earth passes directly over the launch trench. You must evade the alien ships that are defending the launch trench while being sure to bomb the red "Hot Targets". The very first red target that is missed when the Earth is directly in the middle of the launch trench becomes a missile. The missile is launched and destroys Earth.

In the year 2098 mankind had been critically attacked by a military force from Zeograd, a hostile planet in a far off galaxy. Commander Parker Deehan of Special Interception Airforce (SIA) decided to deploy and pilot the F98 Star Soldier fighter craft into the front line of battle against Zeograd. Losing the battle meant the extinction of mankind and the total annihilation of Earth!

A strange and evil presence is lurking in space. Crushing everything in its path, destroying spaceships full of innocent people, the brutal Starbrain is threatening the entire Galactic Empire. Starbrain, a giant computer programmed only for destruction, inhabits an enormous space station, guarded by enemy ships and robot creatures. To penetrate the station is a job for the most skillful and experienced Star Soldier - you! You'll be piloting Caesar, the fastest fighter ship in the Galactic Fleet, with an awesome arsenal of weapons at your finger-tips. Only you can end the fearsome Starbrain's spree of destruction, and restore peace to the galaxy!

The game was the first space-related game developed for the Atari VCS. The player(s) used the joystick controller to achieve one of the following objectives: Destroying as many spacecrafts and robots as possible within a time limit, all while dodging asteroids. Alternating between avoiding enemy fire from spacecraft and firing at the opponent-controlled craft (human or computer). Avoiding asteroids and other varied space objects to cover the greatest distance possible. Landing the space module on a lunar landing pad. The moon can either be stationary or be computer- or human opponent-controlled.

Star Raiders was distinctive for its graphics, which (under most conditions) represented an out-the-cockpit, first-person view from a fictional combat spaceship traveling through a streaming 3D starfield in pursuit of enemy fighters called "Zylons".

The game's plot involved captain Rover Pawstrong (a dog in a space suit) in his adventures on a planet, attempting to eat 20 Space Griffiths (essentially chickens). Gameplay involves the player's character running back and forth on a side-scrolling planet surface, attempting to catch the griffith. The player finds crates which contain items that the player can use to help catch the bird - or the player can simply try and run and jump on top of the bird, thus catching it. During playtime, there is a time limit by which the bird must be caught (indicated by a roast chicken slowly turning into chicken bones), or else the game ends. At later stages in the game, the player may have to enter some abandoned mines, where the griffith may be hiding.
