Age of Empires Online takes the classic Age of Empires real-time strategy gameplay, and places it into a quest-based online structure. Similar to the previous games in the series, most missions ask you to build up an economy, then an army, then crush all those who oppose you, with occasional more unusual missions. The differences come between missions; your capital city allows you to equip your soldiers, unlock technologies, craft items, and so on. Items, either found in missions, bought, or crafted, give per-unit-type benefits. For example, a copper sword might give a 3% damage bonus to Hoplites. Technologies are unlocked using technology points, which are acquired through gaining levels. Only unlocked technologies can be researched in a mission. Both story missions and side missions are available, with some missions repeatable to gain more XP, items, and gold.

Age of Empires: Mythologies is a turn-based strategy video game based on Age of Mythology. In the vein of Advance Wars and the previous Age of Empires: The Age of Kings each player is given a turn where their units can make single actions within that turn such as moving to an opposing unit and attacking or capturing or constructing buildings. Every time two rival players’ units attack one another, a brief animation of a group of each unit engaging in combat is played on the top screen, along with the resulting damage to their hit points. In standard games, players collect three resources; food, gold and favor to construct buildings and eventually train units for combat. To gain further units, technologies and buildings, players advance “Ages”, starting in the “Archaic Age”, a feature prominently used in the original Ensemble Studios Age of Empires series.

The Rise of Rome features a new Roman architectural design, shared by all four new civilizations, the Romans, Palmyrans, Macedonians and Carthaginians. Four new researchable technologies have been added. Additional new features include five new units, four new random map types, and a larger map size option. Pathfinding for all units is also considerably improved. Gameplay-wise, the expansion introduced numerous interface tweaks, such as unit queuing, the ability to double click a single unit and highlight others of the same unit-type, balancing damage done by catapults, and the option to increase the population limit beyond 50 (only in multiplayer games). By installing the 1.0a update, it is also possible to use the period key to cycle through idle villagers. New music was composed for this expansion, which replaced the original score entirely.

From Ensemble Studios™, the creators of Age of Empires and Age of Kings, comes Age of Mythology, a game that transports players to a time when heroes did battle with monsters of legend and the gods intervened in the affairs of mortal men. Taking on the role of one of nine ancient civilizations, players guide their people to greatness by commanding all aspects of their empire: gathering resources, raising massive armies, waging war against enemies, establishing profitable trade routes, building new settlements, enhancing production or military might with improvements, exploring new frontiers, and advancing through four distinct ages. In their struggle for supremacy, players can use mythological creatures like Minotaurs and Cyclopses to bolster their armies' strength. Players may also call upon the gods for assistance in flattening enemy towns with meteors or scattering opposing troops with lightning storms. All of this is brought to life using a revolutionary 3D engine developed by Ensemble Studios. The engine is capable of providing the most realistic, beautiful, and immersive world ever seen in a real-time strategy game.
