Release Date: April 17, 2001   |   Genre: Strategy
The classic turn-based gameplay established by the Might and Magic series comes to the PlayStation 2 in this release, complete with graphical enhancements and new features designed to make good use of the console's power. Players choose a hero to lead across the land on a quest to smite evil, gain power, and recover an immensely powerful artifact known as the "Dragon Bone Staff." In a blend of RPG and strategy elements familiar to veterans of the game's many incarnations on the PC, the player may choose to lead his army on side adventures to defeat wanted criminals or to recruit powerful allies, always watching for clues to the location of the elusive Dragon Bone Staff along the way. When the relic is finally found, the chances are slim that it will be unguarded. The secrets gleaned and skills gained on the quest that leads the hero to the staff may also decide the victor of the final battle.

Heroes of Newerth puts two teams of players against each other: the Legion and the Hellbourne.[5] Both teams are based at opposite sides of a map. The standard map is split into three continuous 'lanes' (Two in one of the lesser-played maps), running from one base to the other. Defensive towers are positioned evenly through each lane, until the lanes terminate at a team's base. Bases are strongly defended with extra defensive towers, and buildings from which units spawn. These units, termed 'creeps' are spawned every thirty seconds, and run along their lane until they meet opposition - which they then attack. Victory is achieved when one of the teams manages to push into the base of the opposing team, and destroys their primary structure; the Hellbourne's 'Sacrificial Shrine', or the Legion's 'Tree of Life'. At any point after fifteen minutes has expired a team can choose to concede defeat - this loses them the game and requires a unanimous team vote to pass or a 'four of five' vote after the thirty minute mark.

The isometric role-playing game engine of the original Hero Quest license is reused in this sequel, set in the evil-infested land of Rhia. There are now 9 large missions to take on, with a largely linear progression in the order these are played. You can choose a team of 4 from 8 character classes, adding rangers, mystics, elves and clerics to the original game's 4. The exact abilities of these can be customized before you start. The game is controlled using action icons at the bottom of a screen to set the basic instructions to move, fight, open doors, search for keys and so on. Characters can move individually, allowing for diverse strategies based on the specific strengths and weaknesses of these characters.
