The player must maneuver a character known as Pitfall Harry through a maze-like jungle in an attempt to recover 32 treasures in a 20-minute time period. Along the way, he must negotiate numerous hazards, including pits, quicksand, rolling logs, fire, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and crocodiles. Harry may jump over or otherwise avoid these obstacles by climbing, running, or swinging on a vine to avoid them. Treasure includes gold and silver bars, diamond rings, and bags of money. Under the jungle there is a tunnel which Harry can access through ladders found at various places. This is required to get around some surface areas that have no way across otherwise. The tunnels are filled with dead-ends blocked by brick walls, forcing the player return to the surface at one of the ladders, and try to find a way around again. The tunnels also contain treasure and scorpions Harry must jump over.

Pitfall Harry, the fearless treasure hunting treasure hunter from the Pitfall series returns to help a beautiful archaeologist rescue her father and thwart the evil St. Claire from claiming the lost city of El Dorado. As Harry, players encounter various animal enemies scorpions, bats, piranhas, alligators and even penguins as well as human adversaries under the leadership of the sinister St. Claire. Numerous abilities are at the player's disposal as Harry recovers pages of the Heroic Handbook. With his various items, Harry is equipped for almost anything. Harry will also find lost explorers and be rewarded with golden idols for his trouble, which he can then use as currency with the Shaman.

Pitfall Harry has been captured by the dreaded warrior spirit, Zakelua: Lord of Evil. You, young Harry Jr., must venture into the unknown, armed with only your trusty sling and your father's journal, to attempt his rescue. Keep your eyes peeled for objects that might help you as you sneak through the Mayan jungle.

Pitstop II is the first 3D racing game to implement a split-screen simultaneous two-player game mode. Players could be in completely different places on the racing track, and each split screen would show the view of the track according to the player's position.
